Army chaplain to serve as visiting pastor

Clarksville, Ark. --- U.S. Army Chaplain (Lt. Col.) Barbara K. Sherer will be the visiting pastor at University of the Ozarks on the week of March 15-19 as part of the University's Pastoral Study Leave Program.

Chaplain (Lt. Col.) Barbara K. Sherer will be on campus March 15-19 as the visiting pastor under the University’s Pastoral Study Leave Program

Chaplain Sherer, who serves with the 1st Calvary Division, has served three tours of duty in Iraq and is also the co-author of several books. Chaplain Sherer will be the featured speaker during the University’s weekly chapel service at 11 a.m., Tuesday, March 16, in Munger Chapel.

Chaplain Sherer earned degrees from Southwest Missouri State University and Princeton Theological Seminary before earning her doctorate in education from Oklahoma State University. In 1984, while serving as associate pastor for First Presbyterian Church in Stillwater, Okla., she was commissioned as a chaplain in the Army Reserves, serving with 3rd Brigade, 95th Division.

In 1992 Chaplain Sherer entered active duty and was assigned to 62nd Medical Group in Fort Lewis, Wash. Her deployments have included Mogadishu, Somalia, with 62nd Medical Group for Operation Restore Hope; Kuwait and Iraq with 3rd ID; and Iraq with 3rd COSCOM. She recently deployed with 1st Cavalry Division from Fort Hood, Texas, as division chaplain for the Multi-National Division in Baghdad.

She is an ordained Presbyterian minister and member of Cimarron Presbytery, has published numerous articles and is co-author of a thriller series published by St. Martin’s Press, the Eden Thrillers. The first two books were released in 2007 under the name S.L. Linnéa, Chasing Eden and Beyond Eden, and the third, Treasure of Eden, was released in 2008.

The Pastoral Study Leave Program was established in 2005 by University Trustee Rev. James R. Struthers of Stillwater, Okla., to bring Presbyterian pastors to the U of O campus for personal and professional development. Chaplain Sherer is the ninth visiting pastor to take part in the program.
