Health Promotion Minor

A minor in Health Education and Promotion provides students with foundational knowledge in the natural sciences to understand human health, assess physiological function and dysfunction, and develop evidence-based health solutions. Students who complete the minor will have the opportunity to explore and develop health behaviors and multiple factors that influence health, theories of Health Education and Promotion, leadership skills, and a foundational anatomical understanding of the human body.  

Degree Outcomes

Students who complete a minor in Health Education and Promotion will have exposure to population and individual health behaviors and outcomes that prepare students for understanding systematic challenges in health promotion.

The critical thinking and collaboration developed in the minor in Health Education and Promotion adds value to other degrees by encouraging students to think directly about how multiple variables lead to health behaviors and outcomes.  

Example Courses

  • HLP 1003: Introduction to Health Promotion

    This introductory course explores health promotion and the different levels of prevention at individual, community, and population levels. The course explores the historical and philosophical development of health education & promotion and public health in the United States, and specific health-related behavior theories and models that guide practice in the field of public health, specifically in the area of health education and promotion and in human behavior change. The course identifies areas of responsibilities and competencies for an entry level health educator as described by the Competency-Based Framework for Health Educators, (NCHEC).
  • HLP 2003: Health Leadership
    This course aims to provide students with the background knowledge and skills to make effective leaders in healthcare. The course will emphasize both theory and application of leadership principles, and students will cover topics such as qualities of effective leaders, team collaboration dynamics, and strategies for promoting change within healthcare. Students will advance their interpersonal communication skills, ethical and critical thinking skills, conflict resolution, and confidence throughout the course.
  • HLP 4123: Health Policy
    Health Fair
    This course is designed as an introduction to health policy, with a focus on the various ways in which government and shareholders can influence and alter health and healthcare. Prerequisite: Junior standing and at least C- in HLP 2003 Health Leadership.
