Clarksville, Ark. ---Dr. David Daily, assistant professor of religion at University of the Ozarks, is the author of a recently published book titled, Battle for the BIA: G.E.E. Lindquist and the Missionary Crusade Against John Collier.
Published by the University of Arizona Press, the book is about an intensely personal and high-stakes battle for control over the Bureau of Indian Affairs and the direction of federal Indian policy. Pitting G.E.E. Lindquist, an influential Protestant missionary, against John Collier, Commissioner of Indian Affairs (1933-1945), this battle ultimately changed the shape of Protestant support for Indian assimilation, according to Dr. Daily. The University of Arizona Press said Daily’s “survey of Lindquist’s career raises important issues regarding tribal rights and the place of Native peoples in American society. It offers new insights into the domestic colonialism practiced by the United States as it tells of one of the great untold battles in the history of Indian affairs.” Dr. Daily, who earned his Ph.D. from Duke University, has been at Ozarks since 2000. He and his wife Teresa reside in Clarksville.
